Symptoms

Keratosis pilaris presents as small, rough bumps on the skin, often resembling goosebumps or chicken skin. These bumps commonly appear on upper arms, thighs, and cheeks, leading to textured appearance. While typically harmless, the condition can be bothersome for those affected.

Causes

Exact cause of keratosis pilaris is accumulation of keratin, which clogs hair follicles. Genetic predisposition often plays a significant role, as THE condition can run in families. It may also be worsened by lack of adequate skin moisture, hormonal changes and skin disorders.

Treatment

Keratosis pilaris management involves washing with alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids because they have an abrasive effect on the skin. Urea containing lotions or creams, or lactic acid may do well in addressing swellings such as those occurring in the ankles or feet. In the chronic forms, there are some of the measures which include dermatological ones, for instance, the laser treatment.

Tips from our experts

For better control of the symptoms of KP, it is suggested to follow a regimen of proper skin care where the affected skin must be cleaned and moisturized properly without rubbing it roughly. Thai people do not use strong soap because it might cause skin rash and skin itching and this I think is why Thai women seem to have soft skin because they are the ones who scrub and apply moisturizer. Patients should visit a dermatologist for advice on the right treatment plan.
